About the Plan

The Riverfront Island Master Plan was completed in spring of 2012. Visit http://www.ci.lewiston.me.us/index.aspx?NID=413 to see how the plan is moving forward.

Welcome to the Riverfront Island Master Plan website.  Here you’ll find news, information, and a forum for comments and ideas about “next steps” in the revitalization of Lewiston, Maine’s Riverfront Island.

Located between the upper canal and the Androscoggin River, Riverfront Island is a unique resource that features the Great Falls of the Androscoggin, miles of waterfront land, and historic architecture, some of which is being redeveloped for new uses.

Riverfront Island has seen significant investment in recent years. Green space, cultural resources, restaurants, businesses and events have all brought new life and activity to the area – and more is on the way.

Through an 8 month planning process launched by the City in September 2011, Lewiston will develop a vision and plan for continued revitalization of this important area – a centerpiece of Lewiston’s downtown revitalization efforts. The Riverfront Island planning process will include many opportunities to get involved – through public workshops, meetings, and other events, in addition to this website.

The City has hired Goody Clancy, a Boston-based urban planning and architecture firm, to lead the planning process. The full planning team also includes economic development experts (W-ZHA), parking experts (Desman Associates), transportation planners (Smart Mobililty), landscape architects (ORW Landscape Architects & Planners) and engineers (Woodard & Curran).

Development of the plan will be guided by participation from the broader community and by an advisory committee appointed by Mayor Laurent F. Gilbert, Sr.  The plan will focus on the area north of Cedar Street.
